Fostering Mental Well-being at SCHS
At Streatham & Clapham High School, we are deeply committed to the holistic development of every student, ensuring their mental well-being is nurtured alongside their academic success. Our focus is on developing resilient, confident young women who are equipped to navigate life’s challenges with a positive and balanced mindset.
Recently, our Head, Ms Cathy Ellott, featured on the ‘Let’s All Talk Mental Health’ podcast with Dr Sarah-Jane Knight, discussing practical strategies for supporting teens in managing school pressures. This conversation provided invaluable insights for both parents and educators, highlighting how to build environments that balance support and challenge, foster healthy attitudes toward learning and encourage open communication.
Key themes from their discussion included:
- Encouraging Open Communication: Creating spaces where teens feel heard and supported, both at home and in school.
- Balancing Expectations: Promoting realistic academic goals and helping students focus on their personal strengths and ambitions.
- Building Resilience: Supporting teens to embrace trial and error as part of the learning process, fostering perseverance and self-confidence.
This dialogue reinforces our school’s ethos, which prioritises both academic rigour and emotional health, ensuring each student is empowered to thrive in all aspects of their life.
